Aakhir main susu karun kahan?
Commonwealth games have certainly inflated advertising budgets for the civil agencies like MCD. After numerous assertions on the need of Delhiites getting a mannerism makeover, the Delhi administration is concentrating on issues such as public urination and others.
Driving down to office, ‘Susu kumar’ caught my attention on the radio. A nice campaign from MCD to humiliate ( may be exaggerated) those who urinate publically. I liked the idea as it christened every one of those offenders with the funny yet punitive name of ‘Susu Kumar’.
My drive was far more interesting as I couldn’t help but laugh at those who were easing their bladders on the roadside. I found at least 3 of them on a 30 Km drive to Gurgaon. All was fine and the amusement lasted well till I reached office. I was in for a nasty realization though….read on
Bladder Burster
It was raining when I left office and the excitement of going to CP after so long escalated in the charming weather. However on Delhi streets, rains bring delight and sorrow together. The delight of the weather quickly gets converted into traffic frustration. Spending 40 min on a 600 m stretch is something not so pleasant for sure. Apart from the usual backache and mental agony, something else was also calling for attention.
The bladder was under severe pressure and in such a situation the facial expressions can hardly communicate the charm of the weather. 20 minutes more into finding a public utility or my destination, Susu Kumar comes back on the damn radio. WTF… where is the public suppose to go, they should bloody spend this money that they advertise with on building some toilets, I shouted only to hold on tight as shouting doesn’t really help under “pressure situations”.
It was not before reaching the MC Donalds at Connaught place that the bladder got a sigh of relief and the realization of civilization got its due again. Coming out (after a wash
) I thought is it fair to expect citizens to be civilized when you don’t have enough infrastructure?(to urinate).
I know it might come across as repulsive to some but hey this can become a question of life and death. I must ask the MCD, “Aakhir Main Susu Kahan Karun?” or may be I should request “Mujhe Susu Kumar ban ne se bachao”. Because I don’t want my country/city to be recognized as one that can’t even provide for enough toilets.
Do put your feelings in the comments…experiences would be even better.
Ciao!!!

A wonderful write-up I must say. But have you ever thought why only ‘men’ have this leak problem? Bladder issues exist for females as well, however, thankfully you never see them ‘losing control’. Although this problem does exist in other countries as well, its probably not as huge as India. But yes, instead of throwing money on the campaign, MCD could have simply spent it on making more toilets around. I truly hope authorities read this one… And yes… I loved the headline.

I have been to a few countries like Norway, China, Italy and Spain. But I have not found any public urinals over there. While some places have fewer people (like Norway), most other places are quite populous. But I have never seen a single person urinate in public even though there are much more open spaces over there.
I think it just comes down to civic sense which we Indians seem to lack in our country.

@Kevin Hey Kevin
Nice observation and undoubtedly uncivilised to urinate in public. But my point was not to point our those who have no respect for civilisation but for those who actually want to act civilised but as explained in the experience above, find it difficult to.
Also I dont seem to understand the fact that no public urinals in the countries mentioned. So how do these guys manage…either they plan meticulously or have strong bladders.

Very interesting Blog , I completely agree with you reagrding the problem . What make me shirk is why are we doing it to just portray our good image in common Weath , why not do it to just improve ourself and start a pan India mission .
Radhika’s point was again well taken , We men are little impatient . lol

Iappreciate the write-up, the subject well chosen. the Govt’s. all Deptts. in general are spending crores of Rupees on publicity to promote figure of Politicians as no Advertisement in News paper is without picture of a Minister, Mayavati’s statues are another example of wasteful spending, but they have no funds for common man facilities. As regards to full bladder pressures it is intolerable for a Diabetic Patient. May be most of those using open/public places are such suferrers. Alas! MCD & other related Govt. Departments have no idea of such blogs. Concerned authorities have no time for such affairs.

That was a fun read! But seriously, I can well relate to what you are talking about. Public urinals in Mumbai are there, albeit few and far between. And of course, every city could do with many more. When I visited Singapore, I saw that there were urinals built at strategic points and were maintained absolutely well. Your blog title and turn of phrase was very entertaining. Keep up the good work
